Diagnostic Endoscopy

Early diagnosis saves lives.

Many diseases of the digestive system begin silently, with few or no symptoms in their early stages. Conditions such as stomach ulcers, colon polyps, inflammatory bowel disease, Barrett's esophagus, and even cancers of the esophagus, stomach, or colon often develop gradually before causing significant discomfort.

An endoscopy allows your doctor to look directly inside the digestive tract using a high-definition camera, helping identify abnormalities that may not be visible on blood tests or routine imaging. Detecting disease at an early stage often means treatment is simpler, recovery is faster, and long-term outcomes are significantly better.

At Sarvodaya Hospital, our advanced endoscopy suite is equipped to diagnose a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions with precision. During the same procedure, tissue samples (biopsies) can be obtained safely, and many abnormalities—such as polyps or sources of bleeding—can be treated immediately, often avoiding the need for major surgery.

Whether you have persistent acidity, difficulty swallowing, abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, anemia, rectal bleeding, or a family history of gastrointestinal cancer, timely endoscopic evaluation can provide answers when they matter most.

Why early endoscopy matters

  • Detects diseases before symptoms become severe.
  • Identifies precancerous conditions that can be treated before they progress.
  • Helps diagnose the cause of persistent digestive symptoms accurately.
  • Allows early treatment of bleeding, ulcers, and polyps during the same procedure.
  • Reduces the need for more invasive surgery through minimally invasive endoscopic therapies.
  • Provides reassurance when the examination is normal, allowing appropriate management of symptoms.

When should you consider an endoscopy?

Your doctor may recommend an endoscopy if you have:

  • Persistent heartburn or acid reflux
  • Difficulty or pain while swallowing
  • Upper abdominal pain or recurrent vomiting
  • Unexplained anemia or weight loss
  • Vomiting blood or passing black stools
  • Rectal bleeding or blood in the stool
  • Persistent diarrhea or constipation
  • A family history of colorectal or upper gastrointestinal cancers
  • The need for routine colorectal cancer screening after the age recommended by your physician

At Sarvodaya Hospital, we believe that early diagnosis is the first step toward effective treatment. By combining advanced technology with experienced specialists, we strive to detect disease early, treat it promptly, and help our patients return to healthy lives with confidence

Therapeutic Endoscopy

More Than Diagnosis—Treating Disease Without Major Surgery

Many people think that an endoscopy is simply a test used to diagnose digestive problems. In reality, modern endoscopy has evolved into a powerful therapeutic tool that can not only identify disease but also treat many conditions during the same procedure, often eliminating the need for open surgery.

Using advanced endoscopic instruments passed through a flexible endoscope, our specialists can remove abnormal growths, control bleeding, relieve blockages, widen narrowed segments of the digestive tract, remove foreign bodies, and place feeding tubes—all through natural body openings without external incisions.

At Sarvodaya Hospital's Advanced Endoscopy Suite, therapeutic endoscopy combines cutting-edge technology with expert clinical judgment to provide minimally invasive treatment that is safe, effective, and focused on faster recovery and improved patient comfort.

Benefits of Therapeutic Endoscopy

  • Minimally invasive – No external cuts or surgical scars.
  • Diagnosis and treatment in one procedure – Many conditions can be managed immediately after they are identified.
  • Less pain and discomfort compared with conventional surgery.
  • Reduced hospital stay, with many procedures performed as day-care treatments.
  • Faster recovery, allowing patients to return to normal activities sooner.
  • Lower risk of complications in appropriately selected patients.

Advanced Biliary & Pancreatic Endoscopy (ERCP)

Expert Care for Diseases of the Bile Ducts and Pancreas

Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is one of the most advanced therapeutic endoscopic procedures available today. It combines high-definition endoscopy with real-time fluoroscopic (X-ray) imaging to diagnose and treat disorders affecting the bile ducts and pancreatic ducts—often eliminating the need for open surgery.

Unlike a routine endoscopy, ERCP is primarily a treatment procedure rather than just a diagnostic test. Using a specialized side-viewing endoscope, our endoscopists can access the opening of the bile and pancreatic ducts (the papilla), inject contrast for detailed imaging, and perform a wide range of minimally invasive interventions with exceptional precision.

At Sarvodaya Hospital's Advanced Endoscopy Suite, ERCP is performed by experienced specialists using modern endoscopic equipment and fluoroscopy in a dedicated procedure room, supported by anesthetic care and comprehensive patient monitoring to ensure the highest standards of safety.

Why is ERCP Performed?

ERCP plays a vital role in managing conditions that block or damage the bile and pancreatic ducts. These conditions can lead to jaundice, severe abdominal pain, infections, pancreatitis, or liver damage if left untreated.

ERCP allows us to:

  • Remove stones from the common bile duct.
  • Relieve obstruction causing jaundice.
  • Treat bile duct and pancreatic duct strictures.
  • Manage bile leaks following surgery or trauma.
  • Drain infected bile ducts in acute cholangitis.
  • Obtain tissue samples from suspicious strictures or tumors.
  • Place stents to restore normal bile or pancreatic drainage.

Conditions Treated with ERCP

Our specialists perform ERCP for a wide range of hepatobiliary and pancreatic disorders, including:

  • Common bile duct (CBD) stones
  • Obstructive jaundice
  • Acute cholangitis
  • Benign bile duct strictures
  • Malignant biliary obstruction
  • Pancreatic duct stones and strictures
  • Chronic pancreatitis
  • Bile leaks after gallbladder or liver surgery
  • Pancreatic leaks
  • Ampullary disorders
  • Selected pancreatic and biliary tumors

Advanced ERCP Procedures Available

Endoscopic Sphincterotomy

A controlled incision of the sphincter muscle to facilitate stone removal and improve bile drainage.

Common Bile Duct Stone Extraction

Removal of stones using balloons and retrieval baskets, avoiding the need for major surgery in many patients.

Biliary Stenting

Placement of plastic or self-expanding metal stents to relieve blockage caused by benign or malignant disease, restoring bile flow and reducing jaundice.

Pancreatic Duct Therapy

Treatment of pancreatic duct stones, strictures, and leaks using specialized guidewires, dilators, and pancreatic stents.

Balloon Dilatation

Gentle widening of narrowed bile ducts or pancreatic ducts to improve drainage.

Tissue Sampling

Brush cytology and biopsy techniques to investigate suspicious biliary or pancreatic strictures and guide further treatment.

Management of Bile Leaks

Endoscopic stenting to divert bile flow and promote healing following surgery or injury.

Nasobiliary Drainage

Temporary drainage of infected or obstructed bile ducts in selected complex cases.

Benefits of ERCP

Compared with traditional surgery, ERCP offers several important advantages:

  • Minimally invasive with no external incision.
  • Treats the problem during the same procedure in many cases.
  • Rapid relief from jaundice, pain, and infection.
  • Shorter hospital stay and faster recovery.
  • Reduced postoperative discomfort.
  • Avoids major surgery for many patients with bile duct stones or ductal obstruction.
  • Facilitates further treatment, including surgery or oncology care, when required.

A Multidisciplinary Approach

Many biliary and pancreatic diseases are complex and require coordinated care. At Sarvodaya Hospital, every ERCP patient benefits from a multidisciplinary team that includes gastroenterologists, GI and hepatopancreatobiliary surgeons, anesthesiologists, radiologists, and pathologists. This collaborative approach ensures accurate diagnosis, individualized treatment planning, and seamless access to surgery or additional therapies when necessary.

When Should You Seek Medical Attention?

You should consult a specialist if you experience:

  • Yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice)
  • Persistent upper abdominal pain
  • Fever with chills and jaundice
  • Recurrent pancreatitis
  • Dark urine or pale stools
  • Persistent itching associated with jaundice
  • Abnormal liver function tests
  • Suspected bile duct stones or blockage on ultrasound or CT scan

Preparing for Your Procedure

Proper preparation is essential for a safe, comfortable, and accurate examination. Following the recommended instructions helps your doctor obtain the best possible view of the digestive tract, improves the success of therapeutic procedures, and reduces the risk of complications. Our team will provide you with personalized instructions based on your medical condition, the procedure being performed, and the medications you are taking.

Upper GI Endoscopy (Gastroscopy)

Why preparation is important

A completely empty stomach allows the endoscopist to examine the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum clearly while minimizing the risk of vomiting or aspiration during the procedure.

Before Your Procedure

  • Do not eat or drink anything for 6–8 hours before your scheduled endoscopy, unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
  • Small sips of water may be permitted for essential medications up to a few hours before the procedure—please follow your doctor's specific instructions.
  • Inform your doctor if you have:
    • Diabetes
    • Heart disease
    • Kidney disease
    • Previous reactions to sedation
    • Bleeding disorders
    • Pregnancy
  • Bring all previous endoscopy reports, imaging studies, blood test results, and a list of your current medications.
  • If you are receiving sedation, arrange for a responsible adult to accompany you home. Driving or operating machinery is not recommended for the remainder of the day.

Colonoscopy

A clean bowel is the key to an accurate colonoscopy.

Even small amounts of residual stool can hide polyps or other abnormalities. Careful bowel preparation significantly improves the quality of the examination and increases the likelihood of detecting early disease.

Diet Before Colonoscopy

2–3 days before the procedure

  • Follow a low-fiber diet as advised by your doctor.
  • Avoid seeds, nuts, whole grains, and high-fiber foods that may remain in the colon.

One day before the procedure

  • Consume only clear liquids such as water, clear soups, coconut water, apple juice (without pulp), clear tea or coffee (without milk), and oral rehydration fluids.
  • Avoid milk, dairy products, alcohol, and coloured beverages (especially red or purple drinks).

Bowel Preparation

  • Take the prescribed bowel-cleansing solution exactly as instructed.
  • Drink plenty of clear fluids to remain hydrated.
  • Complete the bowel preparation at the recommended time, including any split-dose regimen if prescribed.
  • Continue drinking clear liquids until the instructed fasting period begins.

Medication Advice

Inform your doctor if you are taking:

  • Blood thinners (such as warfarin, apixaban, rivaroxaban, dabigatran, clopidogrel, or aspirin)
  • Diabetes medications or insulin
  • Iron supplements
  • Blood pressure medications
  • Any herbal or over-the-counter supplements

Do not stop any prescribed medication unless specifically advised by your treating physician or endoscopist.

ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography)

ERCP is an advanced therapeutic procedure that often requires additional evaluation before treatment. Careful preparation helps ensure the procedure is performed safely and effectively.

Before Your ERCP

Your doctor may recommend:

  • Blood investigations, including complete blood count, liver function tests, kidney function tests, blood sugar, coagulation profile, and other tests based on your condition.
  • Imaging studies such as ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI/MRCP to evaluate the bile ducts and pancreas.
  • Review of all current medications, allergies, previous surgeries, and existing medical conditions.
  • Assessment by the anesthesia team if sedation or anesthesia is planned.

Medication Review

Please inform your doctor if you are taking:

  • Blood-thinning medications
  • Diabetes medications or insulin
  • Medicines for heart disease
  • Steroids or immunosuppressive drugs
  • Any medication allergies

Your doctor will advise whether any medications need to be temporarily adjusted before the procedure.

Admission

Depending on your medical condition and the complexity of the procedure:

  • ERCP may be performed as a day-care procedure or may require a short hospital stay.
  • You will usually be asked to fast for 6–8 hours before the procedure.
  • An intravenous (IV) line will be inserted for fluids, medications, and sedation.
  • After ERCP, you will be monitored in the recovery area until you are fully awake and medically stable.
  • Some patients may require overnight observation, particularly after complex therapeutic procedures or if treatment for infection, pancreatitis, or jaundice is needed.

General Instructions for All Endoscopic Procedures

  • Carry all previous medical records, investigation reports, imaging studies, and referral notes.
  • Wear comfortable clothing and avoid bringing valuables.
  • Inform the medical team about any allergies, implanted cardiac devices, or significant medical conditions.
  • If you are receiving sedation, do not drive, operate machinery, sign important legal documents, or consume alcohol for the rest of the day.
  • Follow all post-procedure dietary and medication instructions provided by your doctor.
  • Contact the hospital immediately if you experience severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, heavy bleeding, fever, or difficulty breathing after your procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at drsphukan@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

An endoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that allows your doctor to examine the inside of your digestive tract using a thin, flexible tube fitted with a high-definition camera. It helps diagnose and, in many cases, treat conditions affecting the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, bile ducts, and pancreas.

Most patients experience little or no pain during an endoscopy. You may feel mild pressure or bloating, but the procedure is generally well tolerated. Sedation is commonly used to ensure maximum comfort.

Yes. Most diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures are performed under conscious sedation or monitored anesthesia care, depending on the procedure and your medical condition. Our team continuously monitors your heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, and breathing throughout the procedure.

The duration depends on the procedure:

  • Upper GI Endoscopy: 10–15 minutes
  • Colonoscopy: 20–40 minutes
  • ERCP: 30–90 minutes, depending on the complexity of treatment

Please allow additional time for preparation and recovery.

Most upper GI endoscopies and colonoscopies are performed as day-care procedures, allowing you to return home the same day. Some advanced therapeutic procedures or ERCP may require overnight observation.

Yes. Once the effects of sedation have worn off and your doctor confirms it is safe, you can usually resume eating. Your doctor will advise you if a special diet is required after therapeutic procedures.

No. The lining of the digestive tract does not contain pain receptors that detect biopsy sampling. You will not feel the biopsy being taken, although you may notice slight pressure during the procedure.

A preliminary report with photographs is usually provided shortly after the procedure. If biopsies are taken, laboratory results are generally available within 5–7 working days, after which your doctor will discuss the findings and treatment plan.

Yes. Most colon polyps can be removed safely during the same colonoscopy using specialized endoscopic instruments. Removing polyps helps prevent many colorectal cancers from developing.

No. ERCP is a minimally invasive therapeutic endoscopic procedure performed through the mouth without external incisions. It combines endoscopy with X-ray imaging to diagnose and treat diseases of the bile ducts and pancreas.

Your doctor may recommend an endoscopy if you have:

  • Persistent acidity or heartburn
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Abdominal pain
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Chronic diarrhea or constipation
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Vomiting blood
  • Black stools
  • Anemia
  • Abnormal imaging or blood test results

Preparation depends on the procedure. Upper GI endoscopy requires fasting, while colonoscopy requires bowel preparation. ERCP may require blood tests and additional imaging. Our team will provide detailed instructions before your appointment.

Most medications can be continued, but blood thinners, diabetes medications, and certain other drugs may need temporary adjustment. Never stop prescribed medications without consulting your doctor.

Endoscopy is a very safe procedure when performed by experienced specialists. Although uncommon, potential risks include bleeding, infection, perforation, reactions to sedation, or pancreatitis after ERCP. Every precaution is taken to minimize these risks.

Most patients who receive sedation remember very little or none of the procedure and remain comfortable throughout the examination.

Yes. A family member or caregiver is encouraged to accompany you, especially if you are receiving sedation. Because the sedative effects may persist for several hours, you should not drive yourself home.

Your doctor may recommend a colonoscopy if you have rectal bleeding, persistent changes in bowel habits, unexplained anemia, chronic abdominal pain, inflammatory bowel disease, or a family history of colorectal cancer. Colonoscopy is also recommended as a screening test for colorectal cancer in eligible individuals.

Many abnormalities—including polyps, bleeding sites, strictures, and some early cancers—can often be treated immediately during the same endoscopic session. If additional treatment or surgery is required, your doctor will discuss the best treatment options with you.

Patient safety is our highest priority. Every endoscope undergoes meticulous cleaning, high-level disinfection, and quality assurance according to internationally accepted infection-control protocols before each procedure.

Our dedicated endoscopy unit combines experienced specialists, high-definition imaging, advanced therapeutic capabilities, modern safety standards, comprehensive anesthesia support, and compassionate patient care. From routine diagnostic endoscopy to complex therapeutic procedures such as ERCP, we provide comprehensive digestive healthcare under one roof.
